Current Issues
Affordable Housing
Brittany is focused on providing a secure future for her and her two small sons. She says her reliance on Covenant House for housing right now gives her the stability she needs to set and achieve her goals. But figuring out a long-term solution for her family is her top priority. She’s not alone. Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, affordable housing was in critically short supply across the cities where Covenant House works. In the United States, where Brittany lives, homelessness continues to rise. Covenant House offers young people emergency, transitional, and supportive housing programs while they build independence.
Mental Health
The pandemic had a marked impact on mental health for people across every community it touched, with more than half of all young people in the U.S. expressing symptoms of anxiety or depression. For young people facing homelessness and trafficking, the uncertainties added to the stress and trauma of their everyday efforts to survive. Covenant House offers individual and group counseling, traditional talk therapy and other wellness programs, and a range of activities at our residences to help youth stay focused, supported, and on track.
Food Security
When young people come to Covenant House, we always ask: “Have you eaten today? Are you hungry?” During the pandemic, millions of young people had too little to eat. With supply chains still challenged and the high cost of food, hunger remains a threat. At Covenant House, we know good nutrition is essential for young people to reclaim their lives after the trauma of homelessness and trafficking. During the pandemic, we increased our meal provision by 75%. We’re committed to provide youth nutritious meals and healthy snacks every day to fuel their healing, growth, and stability.
Education + Careers
Education and career readiness are key to breaking the cycle of homelessness and trafficking. Yet, when young people arrive at Covenant House, 79% are out of school and 78% are unemployed — like the young man who arrived at Covenant House Georgia with just a few articles of clothing and his identification. He was focused and highly motivated to work. He quickly completed our job readiness program, with a professional cover letter and resume. We helped him with fresh business attire and provided him with transportation so he could pursue job opportunities. Within a week, he was successfully employed at a high-end Atlanta restaurant, and soon moved into transitional housing. Our young people want to work, and Covenant House has the programs to help them get started.
We Are Covenant House
Covenant House is centered and built on community, where youth, staff, volunteers, and partners love one another unconditionally, respect each other absolutely, and dedicate ourselves to a covenant of compassion and hope. Our doors are open 24/7 across six countries and our high-quality programs are designed to empower young people to rise and overcome adversity, today and in the future.
